COMING TO AMERICA

This year, marks the 400th year that the brave and fearless women, came to America by the Mayflower & also marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of needlework in America.   The journey started on September 6th, 1620 and lasted for 66 days.    When you think of the hardships, hunger,  & deplorable conditions these early travelers endured to form a new country, it really makes me sad to think of what is happening in our country today.

To commerate this historic event, Brenda Gervais, of With Thy Needle and Thread has designed a special edition sampler called, "Coming to America..the Women of the Mayflower."  She has designed this sampler with the names of the women that set sail to start a new life in a new land.   The design deadline to order was June 12 and is a very limited edition.  We will begin stitching on Sept 6th and hopefully, complete the sampler on November 9th...this is the date that the Mayflower landed in Cape Cod.  I'm so excited to be part of this...each day new names will be stitched into the linen....we will be able to reflect & give thanks to these beautiful and brave souls!  In history, mention has been given to the men who sailed...but rarely, are the women of the Mayflower acknowledged.  I'll have to fine tune my stitchy fingers...it's a large sampler & I would love to complete it by the ninth!

In the meantime...I've been stitching a large sampler by BBD and I needed to take a break.  So I started this little design by Notforgotten Farm.  It's a fun stitch and other than the house, it should go rather quickly.  I'm using 28 count Oaken by Picture this Plus and the called for DMC colors.  Lori has so many sweet designs on her Etsy...and most of them use DMC (my fave).

They haven't worked on my kitchen since a week ago Wednesday...nine days!! It's inexcusable, if you ask me....but the company can't seem to get their contractors to work....they keep blaming it on COVID19...that's crap!  I just don't think they want to work...they were having much more fun collecting unemployment! Sorry...rant over....have a glorious week!!

  1. The extra unemployment bonus is hurting some employers when they try to reopen. You have to be upset and rightly so. Some contractors start a job and leave it to start another, knowing you're stuck with them now. Too late to hire another contractor. Maybe their workers will come back and stay until completed. Maybe!!

    1. The man that owns the renovation company, which has excellent reviews and we have seen his company's work, is pulling his hair out. These guys actually told him they wouldn't work until the unemployment ran out...he told them to find other jobs..so they reluctantly came back...but all they've done is moan and groan about it. And these are not young men..middle aged & older. I don't know what they would do if they had to work a 9-5 job....but we'll get through it!

    1. I found it to be very interesting and to tell you the truth, I never really gave much thought to those women and children on the ship. It's a very interesting & important piece of history.

  3. I wish I'd known about 'Coming to America' but sadly missed the order deadline. One of the 'Mayflower women' was Joan Tilley, my 12th Great-Grandmother! I'll be on the lookout for updates on your stitching progress.
Our country is going through some difficult growing pains but I have faith we will land upright.

    1. Oh my goodness...how wonderful! Your grandmother will now be etched in thread and in the homes of many, many stitchers. I think some of the online shops maybe ordering extra designs just in case someone missed the deadline. I would be happy to pass on the pattern to you once it is stitched. It's not everyday you get to meet someone who had a close relation on the Mayflower...it's a great honor!

  4. An interesting piece of History, thanks for sharing it.
Can't wait to see your start.
That NFF piece is too cute.
That's upsetting about the workers, I think maybe people are getting lazy & using the Covid as an excuse.
    Hope everything turns out well.

  5. What a wonderful sampler!!!
So sorry to hear about your remodel woes. I thought if someone could go back to work they had to...or lose their unemployment. Not much incentive to return if you can still collect and not work.

  6. Hi Bobbie,
What a wonderful sampler and wonderful and interesting history!!! I always have valued history, both the good and the bad, because it tells us where we have come from and shows us what we can learn from the good and the bad!!! I know you will really enjoy working on this!! The little house from NFF is sweet too, and I love so many of her designs!!!
I am so very sorry about your situation and do so hope things will work out right!! I can only imagine the frustration you feel and trust things are moving forward!!!
This is such an unsettling and upsetting time for all of us!!! Stay strong and positive!!!
    Heart Hugs~
