THE BOMB SHELTER...

Our house was built in 1956....the basement is surrounded and topped with eight inches of concrete supported by steel beams....the US Army drew out the plans & then did a 10 year research and followup on this house....a bomb shelter.   In the 50's, the fear of nuclear war was present in our everyday lives.  I remember in elementary school,  having drills in case of a nuclear attack.   Once a month...we would huddle under our little metal desks, heads tucked down into our legs.  It was terrifying at times...and some days, I would be sick to my stomach with worry...but I never actually thought I would own a house where the basement was a bomb shelter.....

Well...it has proven to be a big pain in the BUTT!  The flooring on the mainlevel (which is the ceiling in the basement) is so sound with concrete and beams that they are having a heck of a time putting in new wiring and plumbing.  What should only have taken the electrician and plumber a few hours has taken a couple of days....what a headache!  But I guess there's not a home renovation without it's share of challenges!   They are hoping that they have solved the problems....hear are a couple of pictures so far...

This is the kitchen sink, dishwasher area...

The two walls removed...the back hallway and dining area

The big empty square, was where the serving area was.   It really opened it up removing those two walls.   What a dusty mess!!

The hardwood flooring arrived yesterday morning....hoping to get it installed next Thursday.  We're waiting for the "mudder" to come and finish the drywall.

I'm excited and being very patient...but my husband is already getting impatient....and it's only been three days...LOL!!

I have my little make-shift kitchen in the living room and have made two dinners so far...a little inconvenience is so worth the outcome!

Hope you are all staying sane, safe, and healthy!  It's a crazy world out there...so much stuff going on it makes you want to scream....I guess it was a good time for us to do all of this....I have to keep my mind on other things!!  Take care!!

  4. Oh my..bomb attack drills. Never had to do that. We ad tornado drills. We were without a bathroom for three weeks, so I know what you are going through, but it will all be worth it. Janice
